Sebastiaan, Netherlands

April 7, 2012

Dear Jonah,

My name is Sebastiaan, 21 years old and resident of the Netherlands (that small country just west of Germany, north of Belgium and France and east of Great-Brittain. Found it ;-)? ) I spend my time studying, philosophising, playing electric guitar, training martial arts (krav maga, wing chun) and playing videogames. Currently I’m working on a project about Israël and just found out about this website in a newspaper.

As I read and study about the daily struggles your country goes through with your neighbours I can only imagine the amount of hatred that goes out to the Israëlis. One thing that baffles me, though, is that the opposition from within seems to become more apperent. Orthodox Jews and their settlements on the West-Bank seem to form a major obstacle to the peace process in the middle-east. What is your oppinion on the matter and could you tell me more about why your government keeps supporting it? I thank you for your time, and all the best to you.

Sebastiaan

Sebastiaan,

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you.  I must apologize.

As far as my opinion on the settlements, I agree with your assessment that they are an obstacle to peace.  My personal opinion on why the current government supports the settlements is that they need to keep the coalition in order to keep a stable government and everyone in it happy.  The government also feels that the settlements are not necessarily an obstacle to peace, they see an future agreement to have land swaps and therefore the settlements will be part of Israel.

I hope this has answered your question and again I am sorry for the late reply.  Please feel free to get in touch with me or any of the other volunteers with any future questions you may have.

Jonah
