Dixie, USA

April 27, 2012

I am a mom of 6, grandmother of 7. I live in northern Louisiana. I too love Israel, the Torah, scriptures and the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I have a son named Nathan (we call him Nate). We pray for the peace in Jerusalem and that the soldiers will glorify God in all they do.

Are there Palestinians who want peace and enjoy living in Israel or most of them combative?

Are most soldiers spiritual believing in God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob or is it basically a nationalist, secular atmosphere? Do soldiers carry Torah scrolls in battle?

What about you? Why did you go to Israel having the freedoms to be in America…not faced with war? (or on the other hand…faced with war.) Will pray for you Nate. The Lord bless you and keep you and make His face shine on you and give you peace…today!

Hello Dixie,

Thank you for writing.  To answer your first question, there absolutely are Palestinians who want peace with Israel, and there are many who enjoy living in the state of Israel.  Most of them are not combative.  But because the political situation is so tense, people who would normally be nonviolent (on both sides) wind up in violent situations.

As for you second question, there are many religious soldiers in the IDF.   Because the army is a secular institution, however, everyone must adapt to the secular atmosphere of the army.

I would consider myself secular in relation to the religious community in the army.  I chose to come to Israel because it is a beautiful place, and I believe that this is an important time for the Jews, in that we have a place of our own.  I wanted to be a part of this important development in Jewish history.

Thank you for writing, and thank you for your thoughts and prayers.
