About me – My daughter made Aliyah 2 years ago at the age of 19. She has worked with cows at 2 refetim while attending ulpan at keturah and yagur.
Question 1 – can you recommend a program of study for animal science?
Question 2 – Do you think there many jobs working with animals if she studies for only 2 years or finishes 4 years
The only bachelor’s degree in animal science in Israel is at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Agriculture campus in Rehovot. The Rehovot campus is also where the only veterinary school is Israel is located. The aforementioned animal science degree is a three year degree, as are most Israeli bachelor’s degrees. However, if your daughter graduated from high school in the USA then before she can begin college in Israel must attend a preparatory year called “mechina”. During mechina for “olim” (immigrants) your daughter would take physics, calculus, and Hebrew, as the animal science degree is offered in Hebrew. Mechina for immigrants is offered at Tel Aviv and Hebrew Universities. I recommend Hebrew University’s even though it is only offered at the Mount Scopus campus in Jerusalem.
Most Israeli universities will also offer a bachelor’s degree in biology, also in Hebrew. As far as I know, the main difference between animal science and biology is that the model for most classes is mammals and not just humans, and many electives are agriculture based in Rehovot.
As far as jobs are concerned, many people continue on after a degree in animal science to learn veterinary medicine or receive a masters and or doctorate in various related fields of research.
